Sprunki Phase 16 is a quirky take on the classic Sprunki music-mixing game. The animated characters have changed appearances, strange eyes and surreal details that evoke a mysterious mood. The attraction is the dichotomy of their strange look and tunes that are way catchier than you might think.
Orin draws attention with multiple eyes appearing across its face, even inside its mouth and hair with an unrecognizable shape. Ratty stands out thanks to a purple glow surrounding its body and hooks that seem to hold its parts together. Clucker, meanwhile, has a warped face with over-the-top features, giving the character a radically different look than its standard animated form.
These three designs quickly establish a signature style for Phase 16. The characters do not seem playful this time, but rather give off an air of mystery and eeriness which makes the players curious to explore the audio attached to this.
Vineria appears with two moving heads paired with glowing blue eyes. Gray shares the same purple glow effect as Ratty, creating a visual color link between the characters. Red hair marks Oax, and his features shift and change, as if he is in the midst of some private transformation of his own.
Also the design of Brud is unpredictable, with Vineria coming from its head or mouth. These odd combos make for interesting character casts so there is always something new to learn.
The sky has some kind of creepy, alien look to it - something is not right. Dorpole is spectacular with its ongoing color-changing effects, creating a nearly hypnotic look. Simon has lots of little Simons on his antenna, and Tunner has a big red eye in the center.
Other characters have also been transformed dramatically. Mr Tree turns up with two axs sticking out of his body. Fun Computer has been given a mouth, which makes the computer design even weirder. Pinky is covered in patches of color and mold-like detail. He has long overgrown hair which gives him a mysterious quality. The look of Phase 16 is unpredictable, with changes in shape, color and proportion.
Sprunki Phase 16, despite the horror visuals, is still about the creative experience of making music. Every character has a different sound, a different rhythm, a different melody, a different background sound. When you combine multiple characters, these audio layers mix together to create a complete mix.
Some sounds are intense and a little chaotic, others offer steady backing beats or catchy melodies. The audio layers give players the ability to experiment with different styles. You can add characters one by one to hear what each one is contributing and then change the lineup if the mix gets too crowded or unbalanced.
