Picunki is a music game for the browser, made on the PICO-8 fantasy system, giving it a cute retro pixel appearance and easy controls. Instead than racing to beat high scores or beat stages, it encourages you to play with sound as you assign various musical responsibilities to four eccentric characters. Every accessory you put on changes how the character looks, and the music they play, so every session seems like you’re putting together your own little band.

Picunki is more streamlined than many music games that give players tons of options. There are only eight sound icons, so it’s quick to learn, but still gives you plenty of opportunity to play with varying rhythms and melodies.

How to Play Picunki

Easy Controls

  • Z / X – Choose and put sound icons.
  • Give each character a different icon to make your song.
  • Switch icons at any time for new rhythms and melodies.

Drag Sound Icons onto Characters

The game is focused on four performers at the top of the screen. Initially they seem nothing more than simple grey figures with no personality. You give them different accessories and they turn into vibrant musicians making unique tunes.

The eight icons at the bottom indicate different musical elements. Press Z or X to choose one, then apply to a character. Once you designate an icon, that character starts playing its sound, instantly adding to your musical loop.

Make Your Own Music Loop

Each figure can have a different role in the composition. Some sounds are used as percussion, others to generate melodies or background effects. Together they can be combined to produce anything from calm calming sounds to frenetic rhythmic loops.

The fun of the game is in trying out different combinations, as each accessory changes both the look and the sound. Just one icon replacement can dramatically transform the vibe of your composition.

What makes Picunki different

Picunki shares the drag-and-drop music concept used in other rhythm sandbox games, but its PICO-8 constraints actually become one of its strengths. The small sound library encourages experimentation rather than overwhelming gamers with limitless options.

The pixel-art visuals also provide the game a unique identity. Every time a performer receives sounds, they get new accessories, from colorful crowns and hats to humorous buckets and ears, so your musical group grows visually with your composition.

Picunki is made for gamers who want to have fun composing music with no complex mechanics. There are no timers, no enemies, no hard objectives. But it’s just a matter of experimenting freely until you find a blend of sounds that just sounds right.
